snow shoe ramblings...
Still no sunshine... although there was a moment yesterday morning and another this morning where it got bright; almost promising... and then is started snowing :( So I broke out my snowshoes! I can't control the weather - but I can control how I respond to it! It's no secret that I would rather melt in humidity than freeze in the snow; but it would appear there is no humidity to be found this week!
It's a snow globe kinda feel out there today, there is just enough wind to toss the big flakes around without hurting your face! So with my trusty dog running like a crazed maniac and my horses completely unsure of what I was doing, I made my way around for an hour - and contemplated some of what I had checked out on social media this morning! Todays walking meditation was about reconciling with my news feed!
Of course there were no shortage of DT posts, everything from the Netherlands asking to be second, to the endless lists of ways this man has insulted, betrayed, and disappointed a nation in just 7 days? My gratitude practice kicks in; and I am reminded #notmypresident - but let's be real; here in the great white north we have our own issues brewing!
I've never been a hugely political person; which brings me to another blog post that I read; which essentially shamed every woman who wasn't out there in a pink hat marching? I didn't march, I'm grateful to those who did, and all the amazing women who have in the past; I am hugely grateful for the life I have, and all the rights that come with it; I am a responsible citizen, I vote, stay on top of local and world happenings, and make every effort to contribute to society in a positive manner... do I really need to be ashamed?
At that I decide to keep scrolling, my feed is filled with positive yogi posts, outraged food industry reports, funny updates from friends, and so many fitness related posts. Usually they tend to balance each other out in the positive/negative realm, which really helps make my overall social media experience enjoyable! But not today; today it's all about the war on fat!
Really? War? Ok; so maybe by the time I hit this thought process I was getting a little light headed from trudging through the snow; but I found myself wondering if we really need all out war on our body to deal with fat? Or if the extra fat we are carrying is a by product of the war we were living in our lives?
The 'bombs' the food industry giants are creating for us, new and more powerful ways to get as much sugar and chemicals into a serving as tastefully possible, the captive way that most of us spend our days chained to desks, and all the obstacles that come between us and our ability to just be... maybe we didn't need an all out war on fat; but rather one on lifestyle?
Ya! Lifestyle! My 10 years as a trainer and lifestyle coach has offered me a front row seat to some of the most amazing transformations; I'm not gonna lie, an awful lot of fat was destroyed - but that wasn't the big win, that wasn't the war... the war is fought in helping people love themselves!
The real transformation happens when people decide they are worthy, and they start looking after themselves, start paying attention; not only to what's going on around them, but more importantly what's going on inside them! Giving themselves permission to ease up, slow down, and just be - rather than aggressively waging war on themselves everyday!
At this point I know I started questioning my inner yogi... yes, it was that kind of a snow shoe morning; apparently I am so frustrated by the lack of sunshine I am arguing with myself! Of course everyone responds differently, maybe there are people who need to be shamed into going to war with themselves? I'm sure this is probably true, sadly... because in my experience war is tedious, and tiresome, costly and unsustainable.
Seriously though, I hate the feeling that I have to justify the whole 'warm and fuzzy' approach to getting well... we work out damn hard here At Home; we sweat, muscles burn, and our limits are challenged and expanded, but I really feel like the key ingredient in every success, is the fact that we aren't waging war on fat, and in turn ourselves? Instead we are learning how to love our bodies - not because of shapes and sizes, but because our bodies have the amazing ability to change, adapt, and respond to the way we love them!
We move with purpose for real progress, set intentions for who we are as individuals, we support each other in better (not perfect) food choices, and no one gets left behind! The more we love ourselves, the more our bodies respond, change and become healthier... it's way less stressful than going to war with yourself everyday?
Once I got to this place in my travels this morning I was satisfied that I had made peace with my social media experience; I hadn't solved the worlds problems (far from it), I wasn't any more politically inclined (I don't believe I ever will be), but I knew I was on the right path; and I was in good company; and honestly I was damn cold!
Wishing everyone a fabulous weekend... make love, not war folks! xo
