Two Mindset Shifts for Success in Transformation!
I have yet to meet the person who tells me their life is perfect and there isn't one thing they would change … perhaps they are out there?
What I hear often is that people fear (and yes in some cases dread, and resist with all they have) making changes in their lives!
What I know for sure is that most changes towards a healthier lifestyle take place only when we are faced with discomfort so great we can no longer stand ourselves! Disease, obesity, isolation, depression, fear, anxiety, are all great motivators for change … but what if it didn't have to get to that?
What if you could make small changes everyday that would add up to a healthier, happier, more satisfied you?
Guess What? YOU CAN!
Everyday we are faced with options, we make choices on what to eat, what to do, and how to live and all of these choices either add to your wellness, or they take away from your wellness! We are creatures of habit, our minds like 'same, same'; so that the behaviour patterns it has created stay in tact and don't cause us stress!
I say it often; our greatest transformations come from changing the little things we do everyday! So start there, what is one thing you do regularly; that you know isn't supporting your wellness?
I have had clients swap up an afternoon soda for a healthier mood boosting snack and see weight shifts of 11 pounds over 6 weeks … one simple, totally doable, change equals 11 pounds loss! The afternoon soda went the way of the dinosaur and she was on to the next 'small' thing!
So what holds us back?
Our mind comes up with all sorts of reasons why change is going to be inconvenient, uncomfortable and unnecessary stress; I mean the soda is easy right - crack it open and your done … the healthy snack requires a bit of research for the best options, shopping for and prepping the chosen snack; and then remembering to bring it along … who has time for all that!?
You do! You know you do, and once it happens a few times it becomes as automatic as the soda … we first need to decide to 'try'!
Start your small changes with 'I'm going to try this today' and follow through with the 'do'! We can make all kinds of promises to ourselves to try … without the DO they are empty, and offer no transformation! In fact every time we fail to 'do', we offer our mind more ammunition to use against us in it's quest for 'same, same' - remember last time? this won't work!
So mindset shift number one … No 'TRY' without 'DO'!
Talk to and make plans with yourself the same way you would with anyone else! You don't run around telling everyone you will do things for them and not follow through; and in that same vein you shouldn't do it to yourself!
Pick one small thing, create the new behaviour plan and just do it!
Mindset shift number two is a big one for most of us, no one likes to fail and that fear holds many of us back!
What if I told you failure doesn't exist? Or at least your perception of it can be shifted!
When you make the decision to try, think of your 'do' plan as a fact finding mission rather than a test of your motivation or will power! There is no going back, for the sake of argument let's use the afternoon soda example - you decide to swap it out with apple slices and almond butter, but that doesn't satisfy you, or you get bored with that … you don't revert back to soda!! EVER!
It isn't a failure, it is experience in what doesn't work; and needs to be taken as an opportunity to try something else! You know the soda is not supporting your wellness, you have made the decision to try something new; the only failure you could experience in this decision is to revert back to soda … everything else is gaining valuable self awareness experience! Right?
So Mindset Shift number two … No 'FAIL' only 'EXPERIENCE'!
The road to wellness is one you create for your 'you-nique' self, it is paved with try, do, experience, and adjust accordingly! What small thing will you tackle … today?
