The Happiness Project - 3 Myths - 3 Facts

It's been a minute since I sat down to write; I have notes scribbled to myself on stacks of post its - potential blog topics I want to explore!  As I cleared a few hours this afternoon all I could think of was how happy I was to be making time to write!

Understanding your own happiness is an inside job; one that requires constant supervision because it evolves, and ebbs, and flows with your life - you never fully arrive!  There will be forever's, and there will be flings, and if you can let them come and go as such,  you can always default back to happiness, it's the beauty of being human!

Having gone through some really big lifestyle changes over the last couple of months I have had to personally 'course correct' on a lot of my daily practices; which was difficult because I was in a pretty darn good space!

These days I am leaning hard on the practice of; 'you can't always control what happens to you, but you can always control how you respond to it'.  But let's keep it real here, I'm three months into said changes and I got here through a flurry of hissy fits, tears, feelings of resentment, red wine, and a whole host of other less than attractive emotional outbursts!

So here's what I am putting together about happiness, passion and joy!

#1 Myth -  looking for external things to make us happy, bring us joy, or fuel our passion is a recipe for disappointment!  We spend entirely too much time looking for these things outside of ourselves!

The Fact is happiness is a state of being; an energy within you - one that you are completely in control of!  Taking your happiness back from the people, places and things you have assigned it to isn't always 'easy'; but it is the true path to owning your emotional wellbeing!

If your happiness is hanging on someone else doing, saying or being a certain way; not only have you increased your chances of being disappointed, you have completely given away your power!  Take back your power, look inward for your happiness!

#2 Myth - Over and over we ask the wrong questions!  What makes me happy, what am I passionate about, what brings me joy?  What? 'What' brings us to external things again!

The Fact is we need to focus on our feelings … when do I feel happy, when do I feel energized?  If being around certain people raises your feelings of happiness, if doing certain things makes you feel more energized, then those are places where your happiness project needs to focus!

Go deeper and get more details on your map to happiness by asking more than 'what' of yourself! Who, when and how for starters; and always push for your 'why' … that's where the magic is!

#3 Myth - Happiness, Passion and Joy are out there waiting for you to find them, if you just set the goal and lock on to finding it!

The Fact is what you are searching for is actually something you create, something you unleash from within you!  You can make happiness anywhere at anytime, alone or with anyone you choose; it's always one inward glance away!

We have been conditioned to believe that happiness is fleeting, that we have to work hard to achieve it, the simple truth is when we choose happiness, we are happy … a super power if you will!  The happiness we achieve from material things is for sure fleeting, one minute it's all we can think of and the next it's so yesterday!  Finding happiness is as easy as taking a deep focussed breath and using your super power!

In theory life is simple; it's an inside job that requires an honest and dedicated work ethic!

True happiness comes with a whole host of feelings, not all of them rainbows and unicorns; true happiness has moments of hurt and fear too … how could we ever fully appreciate joy when we choose it; if we don't allow ourselves to feel pain, or grow through struggles?

My final thoughts to sum it all up; happiness isn't something we find - it's something we create; happiness isn't something to attach to other people, places or things - it is our own inner super power; sometimes happiness cries, gets angry, or feels disappointed - let it; it's all part of your personal happiness project!
