A morning in the barn...

Horses have been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, they are woven deeply into the fabric of my lifestyle; and I wouldn't have it any other way!  The commitment to owning them is huge, the daily workout cleaning stalls, the joy of getting out to ride, and of course the absolute therapy of just being in their presence; make the early mornings, and freezing cold farrier visits all worthwhile!

My daughter & I enjoying some time in our Sandbox!

This morning was a farrier visit, every 6-9 weeks shoes get reset and hooves get trimmed... for me that means one at a time holding them for their turn, and chatting with my blacksmith for a couple hours.

Peter, my blacksmith, has been in my life for as long as I have owned horses - we met when I was taking Vaultaging Lessons from his sister (vaultage is gymnastics on the moving horse - a trick riding of sorts).  In those days Peter (6 years my senior) and I barely tolerated each other, all these years and a whole lotta life later, I've come to quite enjoy our chats.

Since I began my nutritional training, Peter has made good use of his visits getting advice on how he should be eating to maintain his health; and while he isn't a client, I recognize that it is in my best interest to support his wellbeing so that he can continue to care for my horses hooves!

Sugar was the topic of this mornings conversation, specifically my transformation program, which I am currently running with my Baby Bootie Mommas.  It includes a sugar detox.  Seven weeks ago at our last shoeing Peter was amazed as we went through his daily intake (just a rough estimation, but startling none the less) and he realized just how much sugar he was consuming, he was even more disturbed as I ran down the list of side effects to his health those levels of sugar consumption would have!

Today he thanked me for the information, and proceeded to tell me that for as long as he can remember, every night before bed he was having one and sometimes two bowls of cereal (rice krispies, frosted flakes, you get the picture!) after our last chat he decided to quit that practice.  He was quick to admit that the first few nights were a bit strained, but the immediate benefits to how he felt in the morning were motivation to keep going!

Sugar is a huge contributor to inflammation in the body, anyone who suffers with arthritis (which Peter does) is contributing to that pain with a diet high in sugar!  A simple thing like cutting out that bowl of cereal made a significant impact on his overall wellbeing.

'Lifestyle changes'  is a term that gets tossed around pretty loosely these days, the marketing and the studies are constantly bombarding us with ways to be better, feel better, do better; it seems so overwhelming that most people aren't even sure where to start, let alone what to start with!

My programs are simple; start with what you do repeatedly, everyday!  Get familiar with all the daily things you do that you know aren't your 'best health' options... pick one thing, make a better choice and just keep adding on to that better choice; based on what feels right for you!  Peter gave up a bowl of cereal and noticed a huge improvement... it isn't about turning your life on its ear - slow, sustainable changes are your best route to wellness; everyone's route is you-nique!
