Nutrition & Wellness & Myofacia .... & more!
There is a lot of research to support that proper nutrition is crucial to our wellbeing.
There is a lot of controversy about what 'proper nutrition' actually is; and that is often where many of us end up wallowing in murky waters, and unfortunately giving up the quest for our own version of 'proper nutrition' … and honestly that makes me sad!
What I know for sure, is there is no 'ONE' way to fuel a body; we are all unique in our requirements, our tastes, our goals and our resources! Accepting that there are many paths is step one, understanding what each path of interest is offering is step two, picking and choosing from all of the options what best serves you on all your yo-uniqueness; is your life long task!
Yes, I said lifelong - you are never going to settle into a specific, static way of nourishing your body … your body is constantly evolving, with age, with expectation, with every minute, of every day, you are changing and your best nutritional choices are going to support that!
Along the way I have refused labels; partly because I'm a badass like that, but more over because the rules that come with any of the labels are restrictive, often eliminating whole food groups, and while I may not choose to eat a specific food by choice, being restricted by maintaining a label status doesn't sit well with me. I totally respect anyone else's different choice; and firmly believe that only the individual can decide what works for their body! Do what works for you!
My path and my studies have also lead me to a few universal truths; the first of which is water is not optional in your wellness nutrition!
Our bodies are more than 60% water it's crucial we are drinking enough water to support that! So how much water do you need? On average we are told eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day - and that's a great place to start!
Think of water as the 'oil' to your bodies engine, it keeps everything lubricated, flowing, and pumping with ease! Dehydration is known to cause muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, light-headedness; new research is showing a direct relationship to dehydration and our mental wellness; with it leading to mood disorders, memory and cognitive issues and a heightened sensitivity to pain.
Dehydration dries out muscles, and our bodies organs as well, consider an unoiled engine trying to run, lots of grinding and difficulty - our body experiences the same thing without water! Adding to that pressure when we are dehydrated our blood thickens making it more difficult to pump; the take away here - drinking water is the first issue I address with any nutritional client … FIRST - it's that important!
Beyond water there are universal foods that bring certain vitamins and minerals to our bodies that are crucial in the maintenance program! Our cells fully regenerate every 24 hours, every 24 hours we are renewed by what we choose to consume nutritionally … think about that - you truly are what you eat! With that in mind - whole foods only! Unless you want your body to be a chemical dump of process foods?
This month I am talking a lot about myofacia; as I take everyone through the foam roller sequences and understanding that our myofascial (a silky film that exists between our skin and our muscles - and also around all of our organs) has nutritional requirements to stay silky, and supple; and keep us moving freely and without pain!
So beyond water; which is first (always) what does your myofacia need?
To start it needs vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, D, E, K, biotin, folic acid, potassium, sodium, calcium, iron and zinc. Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency is the biggest contributor to myofascial pain. Wow right?
The good news is that most of these vitamins and minerals are readily available in the foods we eat - depending of course on the labels we are eating under, while vitamin B12 is found often in animal products like liver and eggs - did you know that 1tbsp of nutritional yeast will give you 40% of your daily recommended value?
When you choose your diet with specific requirements in mind you will come to a whole array of foods that offer what we need, picking and choosing a good variety of fruits and vegetables will always be a good choice nutritionally! Whole foods and some that are 'fortified' (be careful here - we often get less than we hope nutritionally and more than we wanted chemically in process foods!) are what our bodies were designed to function optimally on!
In time perhaps the human body will adapt and evolve to function on 'process' food and all that toxic waste that is lining the grocery store shelves; but for now in our evolution we need a diet as close to 'whole' as possible and we are fortunate to be living in a time where that is for the most part readily available to all of us!
So many people choose nutrition based on weight loss, reductions, restrictions and living in a state of deprivation (often unsuccessful in it's sustainability); my path is one of nutrition for wellness!
When I make nutritional choices that support my wellness, my body responds by managing my optimal weight … give the body what it needs to function optimally, and you will in turn be living in a body that gives you what want! Nutrition is key to forming a good relationship with our body!
I get a lot of funny stares when I talk about my body as something I want to have a relationship with, or something outside my Self - of course Body, Mind & Soul are connected but they each come with their own care manuals, and they all require different attention - the one truly common care they each require is proper nutrition!
What I have come to understand in the realm of 'healthy eating' is that labels and trendy foods are not always the path to your best nutrition! Choosing to be eating food as fuel; knowing what you are going to ask of your body everyday; understanding what each part of the amazing machine you call HOME, requires to function optimally; and providing that nutrition, is your path to your own personal proper eating plan!
The more I have come to know about how my physical body is made up, the more I am inspired to fuel this amazing creation with a nutrient dense diet … what we put on the inside, we wear on the outside ;)
Make good choices - that support YOU, not a label!
